For years, planning a Saturday in Katy meant driving. Dinner at LaCenterra, drinks near Mason, dessert near Katy Asian Town, live music somewhere off 99. The map had range but no anchors. This summer is the first one where that changes in a way you can actually feel from a front porch.
Two clusters have quietly done enough hiring, permitting, and ribbon cutting since December to hold an entire weekend inside their walking radius. One is LaCenterra at Cinco Ranch. The other is the stretch of South Mason Road between Kingsland and Highland Knolls. If you already live in Katy, the practical question for July and August isn't whether there is something to do. It's which of the two anchors you build the weekend around.
The two anchors, and why they matter now
The LaCenterra shift is the one people will notice first. North Italia is opening a new location in Katy in June 2026, spanning a nearly 9,000-square-foot space with seating for up to 300 guests. That is not a small restaurant. It is a room built to absorb the LaCenterra Sunday crowd that has, for a decade, been split between four or five smaller patios.
The detail that matters for locals is how the room was designed. The location features artwork by Texas mural artist Kyle Wadsworth, and the restaurant's design is inspired by Katy's historic oak trees, combining Texas influences with Italian themes. The kitchen is not a corporate drop-in either. North Italia Katy's kitchen will be led by regional chef Shawney Severns and executive chef Jairo Gonzalez. Between the open kitchen, two covered patios, and the 300-seat capacity, LaCenterra now has an actual dinner anchor rather than a rotating cast of casual spots.
The Mason Road cluster arrived through smaller, faster moves.
What opened on Mason between December and spring
- Fuzzy's Tacos and Margs opened its newest Katy location on December 22, 2025 at 233 S. Mason Road, with signature tacos, margaritas, and a laid-back dining setup.
- Meltz Grill, a locally loved comfort-food concept offering burgers, gyros, and hearty favorites, added a Katy location on Mason Road.
- Nonno's Kitchen, a family-style Italian concept, opened in January 2026 focusing on classic Italian comfort dishes.
Three sit-down openings on the same corridor inside a four-month window is not a coincidence. It is what happens when a road that used to be pass-through traffic between Kingsland and I-10 hits enough rooftop density to justify dinner-hour rent. The Wednesday and Friday outdoor yoga mornings at Central Green Park with instructor Samantha Walker fill the mid-week gap for people who work from home. This is the part of the calendar that separates a neighborhood from a subdivision. It exists here now in a way it did not two summers ago.
A Saturday that stays inside one anchor
If you build the day around LaCenterra:
- Sunday farmers market in the morning for produce and the walk.
- Fleet Feet run on Tuesday evening if you want the social version of exercise.
- Weekend dinner at North Italia once it settles into its June opening rhythm. Expect a wait through July. The chain hosted a job fair through May 24, 2026, so staffing is fresh.
If you build the day around Central Green and the Mason corridor:
- Yoga on the Green at 8 a.m. Friday.
- Frosty Fridays route for families with kids under twelve, rotating between VFW, Woodland, Katy Dog Park, and Katy City Park.
- Central Green tribute concert Friday night. Bring folding chairs. Texas Eagles on July 31 is the one to circle.
- Dinner at Fuzzy's or Nonno's within a five-minute drive.
The point isn't that these routines are novel. It's that either of them, done cleanly, replaces the reflex of driving to Memorial or the Energy Corridor on a summer weekend.
The construction story: what is still promise, not experience
A lot of what will show up in Katy coverage this summer is future-tense. Treat it that way when planning.
Texas Heritage Marketplace is a 165-acre mixed-use development near Interstate 10 and Texas Heritage Parkway, anchored by a Target Supercenter and expected to include restaurants, retail stores, medical offices, and service-based businesses. Tenant openings are anticipated to roll out throughout 2026 as construction phases are completed. Nothing about that sentence guarantees a July or August ribbon. If you drive by expecting a functioning shopping center this summer, you will see graded lots.
Fulshear Central, a 22-acre mixed-use site at FM 1093, is scheduled to open its first phase by early 2026. Watch for it, but don't plan around it yet.
Katy Mills Mall is the site of one of the largest investments, where P.F. Chang's is slated for a nearly $3.8 million renovation of an existing tenant space. Construction is slated to begin in February 2026 with a projected completion in September 2026. That puts it firmly on the fall side of the calendar.
A useful filter: if a project's marketing page says "tenant announcements coming soon," it is not part of your summer. If a job fair has already closed, it is.
The projects farther west, in the Jordan Ranch and Elyson corridors, are on a similar timeline. Crust Pizza Co. is opening a fresh location in Katy's Jordan Ranch Market, adding to the food corridor west of I-10. Insomnia Cookies is planning its Katy debut in 2026, serving warm cookies until 1 a.m. or later. Both are worth tracking. Neither is a July plan.
The one athletic date worth blocking
Beyond the weekly programming, one September event is worth putting on the July calendar because registration closes early. The 33rd Annual Katy Triathlon runs Sunday, September 6, 2026, starting at 7:30 a.m. at 24566 Kingsland Blvd, the Katy Boardwalk. If you or someone in the household has been thinking about a first sprint tri, this is the local one. Training in the July heat is the point of the timing.
What this actually changes for someone who lives here
Katy's summer used to require a car, a plan, and a willingness to drive out to Memorial or CityCentre for a real dinner-and-music evening. That is no longer the default.
